So I've had a Dell TrueMobile 2300 router for some time. As far as features go, its pretty good considering what I paid for it a few years ago. But its been a bit flaky for at least the last year and my change to WPA security made it worse. Then I saw a LifeHacker post that said, "upgrade your $60 router to a $600 router for free". And that's by far the best way I can describe what they pointed me to.
But a few things to note:
1. First make sure your router is supported. If its not... then spend the $30 to get one that is!
2. Realize that this is not for the novice. You screw this up , you will break your router. It will become unrecoverable.
The way this works is you replace the 'firmware' <read: the software on the router> with DD-WRT a free Linux based software package that has a TON OF FEATURES. I mean if you want it on your router, this gives it to you. So if you are a brave soul, go upgrade!
And by the way, once I did this my router has been performing like a champ. Absolutely no issues with connectivity since the upgrade.
